Late last week, the website for the SBC Pastors’ Conference was finally launched. Sherwood has the privilege of hosting the event this year and the website is one of the ways we are communicating all the details.

I choose to build the site on the Wordpress platform because of its ability of blogging (a prayer journey leading up to the conference) and custom themes over Adobe’s Flash and E-zekiel. The latest version of Wordpress, 2.5, was used with the following plugins: Kimili Flash Embed and Ultimate Google Analytics. If comments were open on the site, Akismet would have been turned on as well.

Brian and Bobbie Houston’s website was the starting idea or inspiration for the site design, my new friend Bryan Haynes pointed me in the right direction to embed the Flash portions into IE, and dhawker quickly found bad links and graphic issues. Thanks for your help.

Check out sbcpc.net and join us April 29 on the website for the beginning of the prayer journey leading up until the 2008 SBC Pastors’ Conference.

Side note: Sherwood Pictures will have a preview showing of Fireproof Sunday, June 08 before the Pastors’ Conference at 2pm. All attendees are welcome and encouraged to attend.

When I was upgrading my blog to WordPress version 2.3, I made what I consider a rookie mistake. In a hurry to upgrade, I bypassed the backing up the files step. The upgrade was easy enough and worked. I went out to check the site and noticed all of the custom links and changes I had added last week had disappeared.

My problem: I forgot all my custom features were done inside WordPress directly to the files on my internet server not to the files on my computer. At work, I usually make the changes on my local computer and then upload the finish work to the internet. So when I quickly upgraded, I put all the original theme files back on the web in their original glory. With no safety backup files around, I am left to re-create what was already complete.

I feel very smart.

Always make a backup.

We decided to give Mediacom’s phone service a tryout.

I was happy with Bellsouth’s phone line and service into the house, but AT&T has made some changes that got us looking. We have had AT&T listed as our long distance provider and have actually been using a calling card from them to make the long distance calls. Here are the changes: One, we now have the privilege of paying them $5 plus fees for them to be listed as our long distance provider even if we do not make a long distance call. We made all of long distance calls on an AT&T calling card. Two, on their calling card plan; they have raised the rates for in-state calls. I can call friends in TX or AR cheaper than I can call my parents who live 4 hours away in the same state. I think the difference is $.04 or $.05 a minute for out of state calls versus $.12 or $.13 a minute for in-state calls. Most of our calls are in-state.

Today is the day that Mediacom came out to setup the new service. We are looking forward to it because of the included free long distance, caller id, and other features we did not have with Bellsouth. They were here on the day they said they would be here, but they had a few surprises for us. One, the phone has to be attached into the cable modem. We thought they would put a box on the back of the house like the phone company. Now all of our phone jacks are useless. Two, the Mediacom phone service is not working. Their connection to Sprint is currently down. So, we cannot even try our new phone service out.

We are still hoping for the best.
